THE WALK I REMEMBER

I tried to pull my hands out of her captivity. But her hands were stiff and tight. And the man standing in front gave that tough and orderly look which scared me!

I again tried taking her hands off mine. Successful in freeing my hands from her hold, I ordered my legs to run, thinking they would obey. I was wrong! I fell down with a bang, kissing the sand on the shore. She came running, but was suddenly stopped behind me by that man’s words: “STOP THERE”!!

I tried getting up but failed to stand on my legs. All I could see in front of me were the waves rushing towards the shore and the man waiting for me to get up. All I could feel was the embarrassment of falling, the pain in my knees, and the fear of seeing the man. I punched my fist into the sand, lifted my body a little, closed my eyes, and lifted myself up until I stood on my legs! I kept moving, placing my legs carefully on the sand. My eyes kept shifting between the man and my steps. I could make out that my legs had gained speed. Swift and careful, the walk transformed into a run! I ran with all my speed towards that man!

For one second, I lost my balance and ended up reaching the man’s strong hands before falling down!

The man, with a happy and smiling face, told the woman walking towards us, “Yes, our son started walking.”

Epilogue: Now, standing at the same shore, I remembered my first walk here when I was one year old!
