Today, standing in a grocery shop, I caught myself doing it again. I have this habit of looking at other people’s baskets and imagining what their lives must be.
While my basket had only healthy stuff with each item having passed a rigorous “what are the ingredients?” scrutiny, there were baskets filled with no such effort at all. No extra thoughts, no health checks, just simple, unbothered happiness.
That looked like my basket about a year ago, and this sudden thought kicked in.
Maybe we are not always different people. Maybe we are just at different points in the same orbit.
I might look at you today and wonder how you could possibly enjoy the life you live. You might look at mine and wonder the same. But perhaps you are simply where I once was. Or more interestingly, you are somewhere I haven’t reached yet.
There was a time I never knew the actual beauty of a sunset or a sunrise. Now I love them so much. And there are people in my life who stand where I once stood, unable to see what I now see in them.
Maybe one day they will.
Or maybe they already see something I still can’t.
Road trips were the same. I was never a fan, mostly because I thought I could never do one. Recently, I drove 2,500 miles on a single trip.
The person who hates travelling may once have lived out of a suitcase. Our personalities, choices and circumstances keep changing, and we keep passing through experiences others have already been through.
Maybe that’s why we should be careful when we say, “I could never be like that.”
You might have already been.
Or you just haven’t got there yet.
